Dental Implants - The Road to a New You

There are continual advances in dental technology. Dental implants are one area in which these advances are apparent. How do you as a patient benefit?

Imagine yourself walking to work down the streets of Manhattan and you see different crews working on a building or the street you’re walking across. Repairs or replacements are happening everywhere. When a wall is damaged the unsightly section is repaired. When the area is too damaged to be patched up then a skilled contractor will completely replace the wall, making it structurally sound. If a portion of road is covered with potholes or wiped out by natural disaster, the holes are filled back in again or the section is completely replaced.

The experienced road worker makes it a safe and aesthetically pleasing street to walk across again. Although your mouth isn’t made of plaster or pavement, damage can happen to it all the same, including the loss of teeth. Natural wear and tear or even trauma can be the cause of the damage to your once whole and pleasing smile. Like with the contractor or road worker, you want an experienced person behind the tool to skillfully repair your damaged mouth and to replace missing teeth.

Dental implants are used when a tooth or teeth are lost through decay, failure of a root canal or from Gum disease. The loss of teeth is unsightly and painful, but with the help of dental implants that can be remedied. Before a dental implant is done measurements need to be taken of the jaw.

Once the measurements are assessed the implant is inserted directly into the jaw. At this point your bone needs time to heal in order to support the new implant. After the average of three to six months of healing the implant should now be fused into the jaw bone, this is called osseointegration, and the new crown can be installed. The end result, the smile that you have always wanted!

The benefits of having dental implants are wide and varied. For those patients missing just one tooth, it prevents the shaving down of surrounding healthy teeth in order to install a fixed bridge. For those who are missing several teeth it becomes the stable support for the new replacement teeth. Implants can also prevent atrophy, or degeneration of muscle, surrounding the bone.

This can keep the face from developing a droopy fallen-in look. It is a much more comfortable permanent option to having dentures, which need to be replaced every 7-15 years. It also helps prevent bone loss from the result having dentures or bridges. Dental implants can also stabilize dentures that do not fit well, making mealtimes a much more comfortable experience for the wearer. With so many benefits and very little risk, dental implants are the way to go to restore that winning smile!
